Thank you so much, Gary Pearce, for helping me today! I shall acknowledge you in my thesis when the time comes.
I know, I know, why now? It’s already Week 11, we’ve already done one lit review plus an essay for Comm Rev. But why just now?
Honestly, I do not know how to answer that question without feeling guilty that I have been neglecting the very thing that is of most importance to me – How To Do Research Easily. I know how to DO research but how to EASILY do it, been out of my reach for quite some time. Hence why I think I did badly for the first lit review. It lacked the real substance that it needed. Seriously, after reading through it again, I find that there actually are no useful information that is worthwhile for the end thesis product.
To be fair to myself though, there are things in there that could contribute to the heart of my thesis but like Adrian said, they’re irrelevant. Now that I’ve gone through it again, it’s obvious that I did not plan it well in the first place. I hope that I’ve done it justice though. I have planned and re-planned the thesis over and over again. I have even started on the draft for the second lit review but it still needs more revision. Now I know how to really tackle search boxes and databases, I used to use a lot of Factiva for Journalism so I have been looking for newspaper articles by using it, but of course to no avail because it is hard to look for sources from Brunei. So today, and also through my own experience, searching for something is a matter of using the right search word as well as playing around with phrases. It took me quite some time to look for RTB’s Goals and Missions (they don’t have a charter apparently, but I have to check if this is even possible) and only until I typed in “Broadcasting History in Brunei” did I stumble upon the very report that contributed to the flow of my thesis. For the past months, I have been continuously searching “RTB History”, “RTB Charter”, “RTB Background” and “Radio Television Brunei” without getting anything back so now I know that it is a matter of using the right word and/or phrase.
And thank you, once again, to Gary Pearce, for refining this lacking knowledge of mine. I know how to research but apparently not so well. I owe him a lot!
Now I’m pretty excited to start again! Wee!
