THE FUTURE
- “Looking for a new direction”
Adrian confirms my worries of the lack of trails on a roadmap. I seem to have plots of land, maybe acres and acres of them, but there are no trails yet. I’m scared for my life!
Today is the third time I met with my supervisor, Philip Dearman. After weeks of not meeting up I think finally being able to talk about my thesis with someone is pretty uplifting. Well, Philip always have that effect on me, everytime I walk out from his office after supervision work, I am always looking forward to work on my thesis. He gives me such inspiration to work and a dedication to my thesis that I once thought was impossible.
Anyway, we talked about some really important issues. One of them was the need of a history of Brunei to be put into the context of RTB Carnival – which is what my thesis is all about. The way he put the suggestion forward was by putting himself in the shoes of someone who does not already know anything about Brunei. So in order to learn or know about RTB is to, first of all, learn about Brunei because in essence, RTB contributes to much of what Brunei is. Shame to say that I did not think about this in the first place because I was too immersed in the whole 12 thousand word limit thing and I wanted to make everything as concise as possible. However, come to think of it, without a History of Brunei, the whole RTB Carnival thing just hangs there without substance and without any backbone. I thought about doing the history of RTB but now I think that is not enough to support why I think RTB needs this kind of attention in a thesis. A history Brunei that is linked to the history of RTB and then brought together in context of the RTB Carnival would work much much better.
“History and Politics.” The two very things that I need to concentrate on in order to write about something convincing. After all the planning, drafting and re-writing, I am actually kicking myself as to why I have not thought about including the History of Brunei into the thesis in the first place. Assuming that people already know about Brunei is what Adrian said “Naive Claim”. It is two weeks too late but I guess it is in good time that I have discovered a weakness or gap in my thesis that needs some tender love and care. I totally refuse to get a bad mark with my thesis and to do that I’m going to start with making my lit review a fierce one!
Don’t you just hate it when you’ve done something you’re so proud of because that’s the most dedication you’ve given to something only to be frustrated in the end?
That is excatly what is happening at the moment with me and Vimeo AND the internet connection both at home and at uni. I knew I should have listened to my instinct when it nagged at me during the weekend but I was too busy with other things that I neglected to listen to the better side of things. I think stress is the devil. It is trying to ruin my life and it likes to waste my time. I have been trying for countless hours to upload my videos into Vimeo and I have even opted YouTube to no avail. First I thought it was a compression problem vis a vis my clips need to be compressed because they were too big and the first time I tried uploading them it was going to take 12 hours to complete! I was appalled at how long it was going to take but as a friend told me 500MB of a high definition video is normal and it usually would take four to six hours to complete the upload. So I thought, OK, perhaps it is my connection at home because I have been downloading stuff a lot. So I went to uni. But I guess I chose the wrong time to come to uni because the server is a bit down!
I have now sacrificed the quality of my clips and converted them to mp4 format. I am hoping this will help me upload faster and would not jeopardize my overall marks. Nothing bugs me more than being told I have not done well, when I have put my heart and my soul into it, because I have to compress it to a lesser product. It breaks my heart. Fingers crossed I hope I get at least a Distinction with this. PLEASE!
